Course Description:

In the first half of the semester, we’ll briefly introduce the historical background of the rise of the novel (as a genre) and situate modern fiction in the context in which it emerged as what came after and broke away from the realist tradition. The first part of the course will be focused mainly on short stories, which presumably are easier for undergraduates (in terms of length, at least), before we deal with novels later in the semester. Our approaches will be primarily based on our close readings of the texts themselves (as opposed to, for instance, the biographical information or the historical contexts), although different frameworks of interpretation are welcome after we gain familiarity with the texts. To cover as many novels as possible, the teacher will ask students to choose one novel from a short list and do an oral presentation on the chosen novel with his/her group members in the last one-third of the semester.

Readings: The texts below include both those that are to be taught by the teacher, and those from which students choose the works they present on.

Short Stories: (Most of them will be taught, or at least introduced, by the teacher.)
Edgar Allen Poe: “A Tell-Tale Heart”
William Faulkner: “A Rose for Emily” (collected in The Norton Anthology of American Literature)
James Joyce: “Araby,” “A Little Cloud,” and “The Dead” (all taken from the collection Dubliners)
Joseph Conrad: Heart of Darkness (not quite a short story, but less than one-third the length of a typical novel)

Novels: (Only The Scarlet Letter and The Sound and the Fury are to be taught by the teacher himself; the others constitute the list from which you choose your target text for the oral report.)

課程目標
The objective of this course is not only to introduce undergraduate students to the major works of fiction, but also to guide them to a critical survey and more in-depth understanding of fiction since the 19th century, with an emphasis on modern and contemporary novels and short stories. This class, therefore, is not exactly an entry-level, introductory course on fiction. Participants of this course are expected to aim higher than learning the basics in this filed, even though we’ll begin with the basics at the start of the semester. The general term “fiction” here can include novels as well as short stories, and both will be our objects of study. Through our readings of the selected texts, we expect that students come to grasp some of the general characteristics of modern and/or contemporary fiction, in addition to their interpretations of individual works.
 
課程要求
Requirements:
Active participations in in-class discussions are quintessential to this course, as the time for lecturing will be minimized after the first few weeks. Each student is supposed to do two oral presentations on the readings (one on an assigned short story, the other on a selected novel). While you can use any language you like for in-class discussions insofar as other people in the classroom understand you, formal presentations have to be conducted mainly in English. There will be a mid-term exam on the readings covered thus far in the semester. A term paper submitted at the end of the semester is part of the course requirements. The topics of your term paper, however, have to be relevant to our course materials and are subject to the approval of the teacher.

Your final grade will be calculated according to the following breakdown:

Mid-term: 25 %

Final: 30 %

Oral presentations: 20 %

Participation, attendance, and homework: 25%

Important Note on Attendance:
Participation begins with attendance. Please be advised that you are supposed to come to each class unless you are forced to miss it in situations such as an emergency. Students who have five absences will automatically fail this course.
